Poor Tippy

Tippy, a mixed breed of German Shepard, Chow, Alaskan Husky and a number of other breeds, had a great fear of thunderstorms and lightning. He was a pretty big dog — nothing that another animal could have killed — but he was really kind-hearted and loving.

This morning, my dad went out into the garage to get some clothes he’d dried, and walked out the back into the shed where the dog usually sleeps. Much to his surprise, the dog didn’t come running out of the shed to greet him. So, my dad decided to investigate, and found blood all over the shed. There were paths of drops of blood from one side of the room to the other and back again. Lying behind the door was the dog himself, dead in a puddle of blood. What made him bleed to death in the night, we can’t say. It’s evident that his nose was bleeding badly, but it appeared that his stomach had somehow been punctured (though we couldn’t find the hole or any indication of what might have punctured him). We put him on a board, dragged him out to the backyard, and buried him.

On a lighter note, I’m going to spend the day with some close family (since it is, after all, Memorial day here in the States) and maybe make another entry this evening. Toodles.

Update: Yvonne, my soon-to-be sister-in-law who is a college student to become a veterinarian, says that it sounds like he was poisoned by some strong rat poison. We’re not sure if he was killed by someone or not (though it’s unlikely — anyone would be afraid of that dog), or if he got into some rat poison somehow (our neighbors have rats that migrated over here at one time, so we had rat poison out, but as far as we know it wasn’t put anywhere near the dog). Very misterious.

  1. Martin Neczypor remarks:

I’m sorry to hear that Jona, no one likes losing a loved one :(. Try to have a nice day.

  2. Jason remarks:

Oh, that really sucks. The only experience I’ve had of losing someone was when my anorexic California kingsnake died. It really makes you sad, especially if you’ve had a lot of fond memories with that someone or pet. My dog’s only three, so he won’t die for a while, but it’s going to be a dark day when he does. That’s too bad Jona; hopefully you won’t be too sad.

  3. David Harrison remarks:

Wow, really sorry to hear about your dog Jona. Also, if it was rat poisen, it kinda makes me feel sorry for the rats, not a nice way to go.

I hope you have a nice day with your family though, I’ve got no idea what memorial day is but it sounds like a good excuse for a family get-together.

  4. Jona remarks:

A good excuse indeed, David. Memorial day is basically a day where we remember those who fought in wars and such. Kind of like two Sundays in a row.

  5. Mike Cherim remarks:

My condoleneces, Jona. I’m a big fan of dogs myself so my heart goes out to you. :(

  6. Paul Jr remarks:

Man, that’s a real bummer. We’ve had quite a few dogs, and they’ve all died…but I was always too young to really remember. Both of the dogs we have now have gotten hit once by a vehicle, but they’re all okay now.

    My condolences to you.

(Oh, and our last and oldest goose died a terrible, painful death at the hands [well, teeth and claws, really] of a vicious animal…we actually suspect the bigger of our two dogs. Beastly.)

  7. Jona remarks:

Well, today we went and picked up two golden labradors (about 7 months old, a male and a female). They won’t replace Tippy, but Mac and Annie will have their own special place in our family from now on. :)

  8. Julz remarks:

I’m really sorry about Tippy, btw, its a really cute name.

I’m glad for you that you got some new dogs, I know they will never replace Tibby, but it’s horrable to not have anyone anymore. I’ve had that before when I was younger, my dog -Lady- died… but she was pretty old… my parents had her since she was a puppy… anyway…

I hope you’re happy with Mac and Annie, golden lab’s are adorable.
