FileZilla

Normally, I’d just go ahead and login to cPanel and upload things, etc. But I’ve found that to be just as slow as FTP (though less of a hassle). I’ve been searching for an FTP app for quite awhile, but recently I stumbled upon this heavenly jewel: FileZilla.

This little bugger works like a charm. It connects fast, transfers quickly and accurately, and lets me customize just about everything (including what app opens what type of file for viewing/editing).

So, now it’s your turn to blabber. What FTP app do you use, and why?

  1. Jason remarks:

    I use Dreamweaver MX 2004. It’s awesome.

  2. Ryan remarks:

ACEFTPFreeware works like a charm buddy.

  3. Dave Child remarks:

FileZilla for me too. I use IglooFTP as well, because its file browser is better than FileZilla’s …

  4. Milorad remarks:

Smart FTP is very good, and is free for non-commercial use. smartftp.com

Drag and drop everything is nice, as well as FXP (server to server) capability.

  5. Jona remarks:

I’ve never heard of IglooFTP. I’ll have to look it up. Thanks, Dave.

Ryan, AceFTPFreeware never worked for me, I don’t know why.

Milorad, thanks, but before I found FileZilla, I already used SmartFTP. I’d been having some weird timeout issues (and when I uploaded files, they’d be corrupted [e.g., images would be distorted]), and that messages that pops up and says I need to purchase it is really annoying. Additionally, free for personal use would imply I can’t use it to work on client web sites, wouldn’t it?

  6. Robert F. remarks:

Since I do all of my development in HTML-Kit, I use its built in FTP client. Nothing fancy, but I don’t really need it. I have on occasion used SmartFTP, though, because I sometimes have problems using HTML-Kit to work with .htaccess files via FTP. Other than that, though no issues.

And Jona, make sure you’re transferring in binary mode when you’re moving files like executables, zips, images, or the like. ;-) Though I don’t know, it might be borked.

  7. Mike Cherim remarks:

I like Cute FTP a lot. It cost me around $30, one time. Though I will be checking out your find.

One thing I don’t like about Cute (maybe all FTP utilities), I cann open an XML file and see all the contents. I can drag it from server to server just fine, but if I open it the content is severly trucated. And if I save it, it stays truncated. It most annoying.

Fortunately I can open and edit XML file in the File Editor page on me and Jona’s GreenBeast CMS.

  8. Will remarks:

FileZilla rocks! I’ve been using it every day for years now. Ok, there was that *one* day I didn’t use it.

On the Mac I use Captian FTP.

  9. Conor Hastings remarks:

Transmit from Panic is what I use

  10. Basim remarks:

    I used flashfxp, www.inicom.net/pages/en.ffxp-home.php

I like the most cause it allows you to queue of files to be transfered, browse to ftp sites and transfer between them and minimize in the task tray during transmission

  11. CuteFTP remarks:

I have used CuteFTP PRO and love it. Yes it does cost a penny or two, but the ability to edit server pages is a great. I have also used WS FTP from Ipswitch from time to time and also SmartFTP.

Overall still come back to Cute ftp over and over. I think at one time had filezilla installed but was long time ago…might head over and see whats up in changes.

  12. Marty remarks:

Is it possible to ge flashfxp v3.2.0 for free anywhere?
