Fall ‘05 CSS Reboot

As I recently pointed out, this is a realignment more than a redesign. I redesigned, yes, but I redesigned more for the purpose of focusing the site on its content and structuring its information more appropriately. Hopefully this will make the site easier to use, rather than making it just sheerly beautiful (as I know my previous design was — it’s okay, you can admit you loved the pink). It’s a little rough around the edges and there are a couple small incomplete pieces here and there, but for the most part, it’s done, so I hope you all enjoy it and find it easier to use, and don’t think that I’ve lost my edge on design — the next redesign will look better!

You need to have that drop shadow go all the way down.

  2. Martin Neczypor Comments:

Har har, I told him about that a few months ago, and I believe it is an intentional thing.

  3. Robert F. Comments:

Hrm. I can’t read all of the about section’s text.

Some of us have 800 x 600 screens, you know…

  4. Jona Comments:

Bob, it looks perfectly fine to me at 800×600. What can you not read?

  5. Robert F. Comments:

You must be playing around with things. This line:

So look around and enjoy yourself, and if you like it, you can tell me (or tell others). I’m also available for contract work.

Is sometimes not visible, sometimes partly. Never fully, though.

    Minus that, pretty nice!

  6. Jona Comments:

Hm, I haven’t changed anything since I published the new design. It shouldn’t be happening spontaneously; if you can’t reproduce the problem, there’s no way I can fix it. Perhaps it’s just the amount of content at 800×600 (because its position is fixed). I might change the content so that it will fit better.

  7. Robert F. Comments:

That was just once. Because how it’s partially visible. I can see:

So look around and enjoy yourself, and if you like it, you

Though, if I remove all my toolbars I can read all the text. :\

  8. Jason Comments:

Your site’s kinda broken where the images appear…

  9. Mike Cherim Comments:

Awesome look Jona. I remember seeing this design before (the sneak peek), but that was some time ago. Looks great!

  10. Mike Cherim Comments:

Jona, I think some is needed for the alt class in wp. It is a little difficult to make out the posts.

  11. Zach Blume Comments:

AHG! Man, ouch. My eyes hurt. Tone down the header. Otherwise…ehhh…well, I liked your previous design better. This is a bit too funky for my palette.

  12. Daniel Comments:

    Ewww, gross.

Yeah, this just won’t do. That green/orange header/navigation is just too much.

Also, there really isn’t any practical reason for that About box to be fixed…

  13. Jona Comments:

Yes there is, Dan. The link “make a comment” is a “skip to comments form” link, the “commented” link is a “skip to comments” link (not to be confused with “skip to comments form“), and the rest of the content is a summary of what this web page is. A lot of the time, people visit sites through search engines and arrive at a page that does not tell them where they are, so they either leave, confused, or search within the site for the information they seek. In short, this makes it convenient for people to understand what this page is about and gives them an easy way to skip through to the end of the blog entry (or to the comments form). The practicality of it doesn’t become very evident until you view a page in which there is a great amount of content.

The fixed position isn’t essential, however, due to the fact that it does not function in Internet Explorer. Even so, it’s a nice touch, I think.

  14. Daniel Comments:

Aha… I didn’t get that impression the first time around. As soon as it went into “… an aspiring Web developer from southern Texas …” I figured it was a static about section.

  15. Mike Cherim Comments:

Good job on the alt class, Jona. Much better! :)
